Synopsis

State of the Union, Charles L. (Chip) Casanave III
We are pleased to have the President and CEO of Data Access Worldwide at EDUC this year, providing an excellent opportunity to be updated on DAW’s status and plans for the future.

Visual DataFlex 2008, John Tuohy
Visual DataFlex 2008 - a milestone release for Data Access Worldwide - and who better to show you all that Visual DataFlex 2008 offers than DAW’s CTO John J. Tuohy!
Vista Considerations, John Tuohy
A key aspect of Visual DataFlex 2008 is support for Microsoft Windows Vista. Technical aspects about installation and deployment, and visual aspects regarding the new Windows Vista interface, are covered in this presentation.

Alternative Grid Class, Nils Svedmyr
Are you tired of the old grid objects in VDF? Do you need better looking grids to spice up your application? Well, your prayer has been heard - Nils Svedmyr of RDC Tools will present a completely new grid class as Open-Source! Based on Codejock’s Report Object Control, this Grid class can do a lot of "tricks" that the old classes can’t.
Achieving User Interface & Functional Distinction with VDF 12 and CodeJock Components, Dan Levene
Anasazi Software, a leading developer of fully integrated enterprise software solutions for the Behavioral Healthcare industry, is targeting a May 2008 release of it’s new product, The Dr.’s HomePage. This product will provide doctors with a user interface experience that can be individually tailored to readily display the information the doctor most wants to see in the way he or she wants to see it. Members of Anasazi’s executive and development teams, led by Dan Levene, will discuss and demonstrate the unique user interface they have designed around several CodeJock components, specifically, the Skin Framework, the Report Control, Docking Panes, Command Bars and the Popup control. In addition, they will discuss new technology functionality highlights including an innovative use of client and server web services to interface with a central database of drug information and interactions designed to aid doctors in generating safe, effective prescriptions. Interwoven in the discussion will be references to the product mission that has underpinned all design considerations—the business goal of providing a superior clinical tool that distinguishes itself in the marketplace based on its style, usability and reliability.

Building desktop-like applications for the web with the VDF AJAX Library, Harm Wibier
Harm Wibier is the key developer for Data Access Worldwide of the AJAX Library for Visual DataFlex. In this session, Harm will provide an overview of the AJAX Library and the available controls, and he will demonstrate building a simple AJAX Application using the ‘Order Entry’ sample as a starting point, and show "plain" AJAX calls using the library. He will also show you how a real-world example of a web project using the AJAX Library is built (source will be made available to you afterwards!). Finally, Harm will provide an overview of what’s planned for the AJAX Library’s next release.
DDs goes Mobile - Web Services and PDA, Martin Pincott
You can take the centralised business logic structure in your VDF application to a whole new level of deployment/operation by making it available to mobile applications. Using Web Services, the power of DDs and BPOs can be made available. Linking with an existing framework (such as Momote) to utilise the Web Service provides a powerful mobility solution. Martin Pincott will show you in this presentation how Asckey Data Services have successfully created and launched a PDA addition to their existing, extensive Visual DataFlex 12.1 application. Like most things, communication is the key. Asckey will also point out issues to think about when designing mobile applications in order to make best use of this media.
Citrix considerations, Emil Stojanov
Another key feature of Visual DataFlex 2008 is the support for use in Citrix environments. Emil Stojanov, technical director at Quantaris BV, is a very experienced software developer who deploys relatively large and complex systems on Citrix, and he will be sharing his experiences, tips & tricks with you!

Case study demonstrating various advanced VDF techniques, Mike Peat and Klaus Berthelsen
Mike Peat of Unicorn Ltd. and Klaus Berthelsen of Front-IT ApS will present case studies that demonstrate an AJAX Web application running on a MySQL database, Operations exposed to other systems via Web Services, Multiple customer databases being accessed from within a single application (dynamic database switching), and Synchronisation of updates with multiple external systems, via both Web Services and XML file exports.
From Vincent’s Drawer, Vincent Oorsprong
Important input and requests from developers using Visual DataFlex is constantly detected and collected by Vincent Oorsprong, Data Access Europe’s manager of support & training for Europe. Vincent’s Drawer is a well-known vault for these gems and Vincent happily shares with you the most useful and valuable tips, tricks & solutions people have asked him to resolve. This session is not to be missed!
Express connectivity, Eddy Kleinjan
Data Access Worldwide has announced a new ’Express Connectivity’ policy. What does this mean to Visual DataFlex developers? It means that you can migrate your application to a Client/Server backend using the free "Express" versions of DBMS’ like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle or IBM DB2 for your application at no initial cost! This presentation will take you step-by-step through the process of migrating your application to an Express DBMS.
Electos advanced, Eddy Kleinjan
Building a website starts with making a nice, visual design captured in HTML. The content maintenance part is what Electos is about - as you may know - but how do you get from an HTML design to an Electos template? What does it take to create Electos templates and how do Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) come into play? Out of the box, one can easily build his or her own Web Shop with Electos, but how far does the basic functionality reach - standard, or tailor-made? In this session see how people use Electos for building Web Shops, as well as how to use another advanced feature in Electos 3.1 – Parameters for Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
New on the savannah with Herman Velthuys
Did you know that the Visual DataFlex Personal campaign has attracted many new developers in Europe who are now using Visual DataFlex? At EDUC 2008 we will give you insight into the challenges and, of course, successes that a Visual DataFlex newbie has experienced and is willing to share with us - Herman Velthuys of GGN Brabant!

Dynamic AI v6, Carsten Sørensen
Carsten Sørensen, CEO of Cintac, presents the latest features in the latest version of Cintac’s Dynamic AI business intelligence tool. With the growing number of DataFlex developers adopting Client/Server technology, adopting Dynamic AI for management reporting on business information is rapidly growing, as well. This latest version allows for more rapid deployment and start-up, and also offers an exciting new feature - full support of Dynamic AI on your iPhone!

Adding value to existing data with Dynamic AI
Kjeld Gandrup, Systems Manager at NOVAX, demonstrates how NOVAX A/S has added value to existing customers’ large amounts of historic and new health-care data through a secure web based solution. This demonstration will give you an insight in a different approach to business intelligence

Interfacing Code Jock components, Vincent Oorsprong
Visual DataFlex Studio 12 brought a very sophisticated development interface to developers. New in Visual DataFlex 2008 is that the interface for end-users now also offers this enhanced, good-looking new interface. "Skinning" and Codejock controls are the key ingredients that enable this - but Codejock offers even more! This presentation by DAW’s Vincent Oorsprong will show you more about these advanced visual controls that you can add to your application - quickly and easily!
